Double-standard seems to exist for cops

Editor,

Davis County Attorney General Troy Rawlings can’t, in good public faith, excuse a police officer for shooting a drunken woman in the face one week, then charge a citizen homeowner for shooting at home invaders the next (Jan. 23, “Morgan officer who shot woman won’t be prosecuted,” and Feb. 2, “Layton homeowner arrested for shooting handgun as burglary suspect fled”).

Layton police say they would have charged the homeowner with assault if he was trying to hit the home invaders. But the district attorney gives a pass to a Morgan County deputy for shooting a drunken woman point blank in the face. The deputy, shown clearly on video, was in no danger of the drunk driver.

So, if I have a badge, it’s all good even in the middle of the road.  But watch out if I am freaked out finding a guy in my house with a crowbar and two more friends outside and I shoot off a couple of rounds. It’s jail time.
