Thumbs up: To an effort in the Utah Legislature to pass a law that prohibits smoking in a vehicle when a child 15 or younger is in the vehicle. If the law passes, warnings will be issued by police until June 1, 2014. After that, a $45 fine will result.
Thumbs down: To an effort in the Legislature to mandate that vehicle operators yield to buses that are traveling in the same direction and re-entering traffic flow. While that is always recommended, making it a specific law doesn’t seem a wise idea. We don’t think this is a major problem on the roads.
Thumbs up: To Weber State University student Jessica Brooks, 15. She’s getting ready to graduate and preparing to start medical school, all before she receives her driver’s license.
Thumbs down: To all that snow which doesn’t seem to be enough. If the past few days have added snow in the Top of Utah, that probably helps our snowpack some, but what we really need is lots of snow in the mountains.
Thumbs up: To an Ogden dress shop, “Give Me a Chance,” that specializes in making sure that lower-income residents can afford wedding and other specialized attire. The shop also features sewing classes.
Thumbs down: To the constant uncertainty about the federal budget and whether there will be cuts that affect states. We need pols in Washington D.C. who are capable of compromise. The constant battling has led to many state legislators, including Utah’s, unsure about funding issues.
