Box Elder County makes public comment difficult

Editor,

The request was denied again, to move our Box Elder County public meeting to a more appropriate time for our citizens to participate. At the present time, the meeting starts at 5:00 p.m.; most citizens are just getting off of work at this time. The commissioners’ reason for not moving the time schedule is that they would have to pay their workers overtime. An easy solution is to pay them in comp time.

I find their excuse ironic because they just gave government employees a raise at an increase of $615,000. Overall increase to the budget $942,000. There is more money coming out of the private sector’s pocket, leaving them less to live on to increase government employees’ pockets, which gives them more money to live on.

Public comment rule number 3 states, “Please speak to the commissioners as a group, do not speak to specific member(s) of the commission, staff or public.” This rule violates our First Amendment, right of freedom of speech. This rule should be stricken. We should be able to individually address commissioners, staff and public if we feel there is wrong doing or to offer praise. Our leaders need to remember that they are ‘our employees’ not the other way around.

Corrections are needed on a previous News and Journal report. Tooele County’s overall budget was reported at $29 million, their actual overall budget is $52 million. Correction is also needed for Box Elder County’s general budget, which is over $13 million and not the $5 million reported. Box Elder County’s overall budget is over $31 million and not the $29 million as reported. These quotes were from the documents that Auditor Tom Kotter provided.
