William and Mary Backus

William “Bill” and Mary Backus of Syracuse were honored for their 65th wedding anniversary with a private party celebrating their life and adventures together.
They met in Vernal at a store where she was working. They were married on Saturday, Feb. 14, 1948, Harry S. Truman was president.
He was born Sept. 7, 1928, to Arthur and Lena Backus of Marlow, Okla.
She was born Feb. 5, 1929, to Earl Morgan and Jennie Brimhall in Holladay.
They raised three sons and a daughter: Greg Backus, Lynn Backus, Gene Backus and Mary Ann Backus Fletcher.
As an entrepreneur, he moved his family around to several states before settling in Utah. One of their fondest adventures was the motorcycle rental business they started in Amarillo, Texas. After moving back to Utah, he and his sons created a construction company, building many houses and subdivisions in the Davis County area.
He retired from Hill Air Force Base as a computer security technician, and she retired from the Davis County School District. Both retired in 1995.
They now have nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
