It’s February fandemonium for high school basketball in Utah as several of the state championships tournaments get under way this week around the state.

In fact, by week’s end, St. Joseph will know if its unbeaten girls team can add another title trophy to their 2012 trophy.

Also, the 3-A tournaments jump into action on Friday and Saturday with first-round games at host schools.

The area’s newest school, Legacy Prep, stages a play-in game to the 1-A girls tournament today versus Wayne at the Sevier Valley Center.

Defending 1-A champion St. Joseph draws the opening game of Wednesday’s first round in Richfield at 10 a.m. against the play-in winner, with Layton Christian (11-7) playing in the lower bracket at 5:30 p.m. against Duchesne.

Rich (17-1) could be the Jayhawks’ biggest challenge, and would meet St. Joseph in the semifinals. LCA lost to St. Joseph by one this past week.

In the 3-A girls openers, Region 11 champion Morgan and Bear River draw home games, while Ogden is at Delta on Saturday.

In the 3-A boys tournament openers on Friday, Region 11 champion and Ben Lomond are at home, with Bear River and Ogden opening on the road.

The 3-A boys and girls tournaments then resume Feb. 21 at Weber State University’s Dee Events Center.
