North Ogden legislator’s bill deals with invasive fish

SALT LAKE CITY — A local lawmaker’s bill giving the Utah Wildlife Board the authority to dispose of invasive fish in Utah waters has been recommended by a House committee.

Rep. Ryan Wilcox, R-North Ogden, said he wished it was unnecessary to run H 216 to address the matter, but said invasive fish in Utah waterways are a growing problem.

Robin Cahoon, legislative liaison for the Division of Wildlife Resources, cited the growing population of burbot in Flaming Gorge, June suckers in Utah Lake and white bass in Deer Creek as cases where people have illegally placed into state waters fish that threaten native populations.

The committee recommended the measure be placed on the House’s consent calendar, which means it would not be subject to extensive debate before being brought up for a vote.
