Jayhawks, Eagles post opening-round victories

RICHFIELD — The defending state 1-A champion St. Joseph Jayhawks opened up a tight game with a strong second half to defeat Wayne 51-35 in the opening game of the state tournament on Wednesday at the Sevier Valley Center.

St. Joseph (19-0) outscored Wayne 26-12 after the break. Liz Tomon led the way with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

Katie Panushka also played well, scoring seven points, with seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.

Rebekah Rasmussen led Wayne with 17 points.

St. Joseph will now play Milford, a 55-46 winner over Green River, at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Sevier Valley Center.

• LAYTON CHRISTIAN 40, DUCHESNE 38: At Richfield, the upset bug nearly got the Eagles, but Layton Christian held off Duchesne to advance to the quarterfinals. The contest was close throughout.

The LCA Eagles will nw meet Escalanted at 5:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals at the Sevier Valley Center.

• RICH 41, PANGUITCH 39: At Richfield, heavily favored Rich nearly dropped into the consolation bracket. Emma Peart put in the game-winning basket with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Rebels past Panguitch.

Alyssa Brown scored 12 and Alisa Petersen added 11 for Rich.

Darri Frandsen led Panguitch with 11.
