SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah lawmakers are changing a proposal to create an "In God We Trust" license plate by removing a fee that collected money for a patriotic group.
Under the original bill, drivers would pay $25 a year to display the design, and proceeds would support the Provo-based America's Freedom Festival.
Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, introduced a change to the bill Wednesday that drops the donation and any collection of funds for the festival.
Weiler says the change was made in response to criticism, including complaints from other organizations that wanted a chance receive the funds.
Weiler says America's Freedom Festival supports the change.
The license plate, which would bear the motto and an American flag, won preliminary approval in the Senate Wednesday.
It now awaits final approval in the Senate.
