RICHFIELD -- The Layton Christian Academy Eagles enjoyed the fruits of another thriller, surging into the state 1-A girls basketball semifinals with a 42-40 victory over Escalante on Thursday at the Sevier Valley Center.
The Eagle's Alissa Atisme knocked down a pair of free throws in the final second to get the lead. Then, Atisme stole the inbounds pass to seal the win and send LCA into the semifinals, where the Eagles will meet Piute at 7:30 p.m.
Layton Christian took a 15-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Moquis battled back to lead 24-21 at halftime. LCA again built a lead, and had a 31-28 edge after three periods.
Shayla Simpson and Teneshia Davison led the team offensively before fouling out in the final quarter with 13 points each.
Atisme added nine points. The Eagles (13-7 overall) were 9 of 15 at the foul line.
Jaycee Nez led the Moquis with 16 points. Escalante went 12 of 13 at the foul line.
* ST. JOSEPH 30, MILFORD 27: At Richfield, the Jayhawks advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought to wrap up the day's action.
Katie Panushka and Maddi White each hit 3-pointers in the final minutes and St. Joseph withstood Milford's late game-tying shot attempt to advance to play Rich.
The teams heated up after battling through three quarters of tight offense. Milford nailed a shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter to give them to a 16-15 edge.
The two teams battled back and forth to the end. St. Joseph is 20-0 on season.
* RICH 50, MONTICELLO 27: At Richfield, the Rebels held Monticello to 10 second-half points and pulled away to win the quarterfinal battle.
Alisa Peterson and Alyssa Brown led Rich with 13 points each. Emma Peart added 10 points in the win.
The Buckaroos were led by Zoe Chadwick's eight points.
Region 5 play-in
* ROY 39, BOX ELDER 29: At Brigham City, the Bees had the home-court advantage, but the Royals won the half-game to advance to play Mountain Crest in the other half-game.
Whitney Hatch led Roy with nine points, while three teammates had eight points. The Royals helped their cause with 13 free throws.
Mitzi Munns paced Box Elder with 10 points.
* MOUNTAIN CREST 28, ROY 19: At Brigham City, the Mustangs built a first-quarter lead then held on for a win in the play-in game.
The Mustangs advanced to the state 4-A tourney, which begins Tuesday.
