OREM -- The more things seem to change, the more they stay the same.
Following the first day of action at the state 3-A wrestling championships at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center, defending team champion Delta led the field with two rounds of wrestling to go.
Defending 2-A champion Millard and defending 1-A champion Altamont built big leads after the first day in their tournament brackets, a day after Pleasant Grove (5-A) and Maple Mountain (4-A) defended their team titles.
If there is a reversal, it might come in the 3-A ranks, where Payson and Wasatch are withing reach of the Rabbits going into today's finals rounds of action.
Delta had 107.5 points, followed by Payson (97), Wasatch (89) and Uintah (69). Region 6 champion Bear River is sixth, and will send three grapplers forward to today's semifinals.
Bear River's Nickolas Bingham won a pair of matches at 113 pounds on Friday to advance. Teammate Dominic Kunder did the same at 126 pounds to advance to today's semifinals.
At 285, the Bears' Brodee Stevenson won twice to advance to today's semifinals. Nine Bear River wrestlers earned opening-round wins but six were sent to the consolation bracket in the second round.
Morgan's Jayden Pentz won a pair of matches at 106 pounds, and will look for a pair of wins today to earn the title.
The Trojans' Thomas Ericson (285) and Ben Lomond's Rafael Zendejas (126) also won their first-round matches.
Action begins today at 10:30 a.m., with the finals set for 5 p.m.
