Police guard Layton Hills Mall doors after threat made

LAYTON — Shoppers at the Layton Hills Mall on Sunday saw extra police about an hour before closing time.

Officers were stationed at every door after Layton police received word that someone had made a threat to cause people harm at the mall.

Layton Sgt. Jeff Roderick said police were still unsure, as of 11:20 p.m.,  whether the threat was real or just someone “blowing off steam.”

But Roderick said police had a suspect and would be investigating the incident further.

Roderick said the extra police were needed to make sure the suspect would not be allowed to either enter or leave the mall.

The suspect is believed to have not been at the mall during that time, he said.

Roderick said police soon would release further comment on the case once more is uncovered.

There was a high volume of calls from the general public to the police department regarding the police presence, he said.
