Editor,
In a belated response to failed congressional candidate, Donna McAleer and her Feb. 8 anti-gun guest commentary (“Are we safer today?”), it’s apparent that Army military police experience is no guarantee of sound thinking. Ms. McAleer is absolutely wrong when she says confiscation is not the ultimate goal of gun control advocates. The dirty secret is that liberals hate “power to the people,” and rendering citizens defenseless removes any obstacle to whatever constitutional abuse progressives may wish to engage in their quest for utopia. They figure that if all human variables can be regulated through government control, we’ll have paradise. The downside is that we might as well live in North Korea.
Ms. McAleer should consider the authors of the Second Amendment were not talking about swords or pikes but the “effective” weapon of the day which was the flintlock musket. A hundred years later, the effective weapon was the bolt-action or lever-action rifle. Today it is the semi-automatic rifle. Yes, firearms are mixed blessings, but free citizens should have the option to possess them as insurance against tyranny.
If Ms. McAleer is really concerned about the killing of children, she should address her own Democratic party’s enthusiastic support for Planned Parenthood. They snuff out more precious lives in a day than all the Sandy Hooks in our history.
