SANDY – Real Salt Lake signed rookie forward Devon Sandoval on Tuesday.
Real Salt Lake traded up to draft Sandoval in the second round (29th overall) of January’s MLS SuperDraft. The University of New Mexico product has been impressive in preseason, starting all but one of RSL’s five matches thus far. RSL first became familiar with Sandoval when he trained with the Claret-and-Cobalt for a week last summer.
Per league and club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
“This is a dream come true,” Sandoval said. “After being able to train with the team last summer I knew that this was where I wanted to be. To have it work out like I actually wanted it to, which is very unlikely in soccer, is a great feeling. I’m ecstatic, super happy and couldn’t ask for much more.”
A pure target forward, Sandoval had a stellar college career, earning second team All-America honors in his senior season of 2012 and finishing his four-year college career with 28 goals and 17 assists. He will be immediately added to Real Salt Lake’s roster.
“We are excited to sign Devon,” Real Salt Lake general manager Garth Lagerwey said. “He is a true No. 9 type striker, comfortable playing with his back to goal and those kinds of players are very difficult to find domestically. He is having a good preseason so far and we look forward to his continued development.”
