State 4-A girls basketball tournament: Falcons, Lakers open with wins

TAYLORSVILLE -- The Clearfield High Falcons got off to a winning start at the state 4-A girls basketball tournament at Salt Lake Community College.

The Falcons, the No. 3 seed from Region 6, beat Murray, the No. 2 seed from Region 1, 50-40, in the first game of the day.

Bailey Douglas led Clearfield with 23 points. The Falcons jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the opening quarter and maintained the lead at every stop. Clearfield helped its cause with a 17 of 23 effort at the foul line. Seven other Clearfield players found the scoring column.

Jordan Stah led Murray with 13 points.

The Falcons will play in Thursday's semifinal at 7 p.m. The opponent will be Springville, which turned back a spirited Mountain Crest squad. Unbeaten Springville led 36-35 after three quarters then pulled away.

Region 5 champion Bonneville jumped out to a big half-time lead and defeated Maple Mountain 50-31. The Lakers will play in Thursday's 5:30 p.m. semifinal.

Logan, Sky View and Region 6 champion Bountiful all have games later in the day.
