Son of former Okla. congressman arrested in Utah

AMERICAN FORK — The 37-year-old son of a former longtime Oklahoma congressman has been jailed in Utah on suspicion of shoplifting.

American Fork police say Chad Istook grabbed a pack of cigarettes late Saturday at a Fresh Market grocery store.

Istook took off but was captured a short distance away. Police say a security video shows a store employee trying to stop him.

Authorities say Istook has theft convictions in Oklahoma and Texas. He is being held at Utah County jail on two theft charges — one for a previous shoplifting incident at the Fresh Market last spring.

Ernest Istook was a Republican congressman from Oklahoma for 14 years until 2006. He is a distinguished fellow and talk-radio host at The Heritage Foundation. He didn’t immediately return calls from The Associated Press. Earnest Istook acknowledged in 2010 that his son has troubles.
