Layton wins, Fremont loses in 5-A semis

TAYLORSVILLE — The Lancers are a game away from the ultimate prize.

Layton High’s girls basketball squad staged an impressive 41-38 victory over previously unbeaten Bingham on Friday in the state 5-A semifinals at Salt Lake Community College.

Down as many as nine points early, the Lancers (17-7) battled back to take a one-point lead in the final minutes.

The game see-sawed from there, with Layton’s players camly sinking key free throws until the final seconds. Bingham was unable to tie the game on a late 3-point try.

Ashley Price tallied 11 points, while Livia Treseder added 11 points and 10 big rebounds for Layton. Cassidy Anderson had nine points and five boards, while Maddi Smith checked in with eight points for the Lancers, who shot 14 of 18 from the foul line.

Jillian Powell scored 10 for Bingham (23-1), while Ashton Henderson added nine.

The Miners led 20-11 at halftime as both squads shot less than 35 percent from the field. Layton’s 30 second-half points put them in the final.

• RIVERTON 54, FREMONT 47 (OT): At Taylorsville, the Silver Wolves kept battling back, but the Silverwolves finally got the victory.

Fremont High’s girls basketball squad fell to the Riverton Silverwolves 54-47 on Friday in the state 5-A semifinals at Salt Lake Community College.

The game was close throughout, and Fremont tied the game in the final minute of regulation at 45-all.

In the extra period, Fremont’s Amanda Wayment was fouled with just under two minutes to play. She drained the free throws to tie the game at 47.

Two Riverton free throws put the Silverwolves ahead to stay, although Fremont had a couple of late chances to tie the game up.

But four late turnovers cost Fremont (13-11 overall).

Riverton guard Jamie Smith came up with two big plays. She drained a long 3-pointer to beat the third-quarter buzzer, then later grabbed an offensive rebound away from four and grabbing a rebound among four Fremont players with less than 35 seconds left.

Riverton’s a box-and-one defense against Fremont’s Shelby Molen only worked a bit. Molen hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Taneshia Daniels chipped in with nine points, whil Wayment added eight.

The Silver Wolves went 7 of 12 at the foul line.
