Thumbs up: To those at North Ogden Elementary School who have raised funds for a heart defibrillator. There are two big pluses to this act: having it can help save lives and the defibrillator was raised with private donations.
Thumbs down: To those users who find Facebook more addictive than tobacco and alcohol. Or so says a survey from the University of Chicago. Social media is a lot of fun and an intriguing business tool, but if you're addicted to it, time for a break.
Thumbs up: To the CooksBooks Initiative program volunteers. In the Ogden School District, there are 15 CooksBooks volunteers who tutor students at 10 schools who need to improve their reading skills.
Thumbs down: To the rapid rise in gasoline prices. Having prices rise 30 or 40 cents on the gallon during winter is not usual, but we have no doubt that paid flaks for big oil have ready "explanations" for the price increases. Meanwhile, buying gasoline costs more than groceries.
Thumbs up: To Dixie State University, which achieved university status recently. It was about time for the 101-year-old institution of learning to achieve that status.
Thumbs down: To the tackiness of a Las Vegas shooting range that for Valentine's Day, sold "take a shot at love" packages that included submachine rounds. Some ideas are better left unsaid.
