SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers have once again delayed voting on a bill that declares Utah alone is able to regulate firearms in the state.
Lawmakers in at least 16 other states have introduced similar legislation in response to President Barack Obama’s call for increased gun control after recent mass shootings.
The proposal is one of the most controversial in the Legislature this year and legislative attorneys say it’s very likely a court would find the law unconstitutional if it passes.
Pleasant Grove Republican Rep. Brian Greene sponsored the bill and disagrees that it’s unconstitutional. He says the bill is an assertion of state’s rights and individual liberty.
The bill was discussed during hearings Wednesday and Friday, but lawmakers ran out of time to call for a vote on both days.
