PROVO -- Authorities say a woman who was arrested on suspicion of hitting a bicyclist in Provo and sending him to his death in front of an oncoming commuter train is an illegal immigrant.Police say 49-year-old Maria Fregoso-Avina has been charged with negligent homicide. Federal authorities have placed an immigration hold on her.
She is accused of hitting 69-year-old Douglas Crow on Feb. 15 in Provo. After Fregoso-Avina's SUV hit Crow's bike, he fell into train tracks. He died after being struck by a FrontRunner commuter train.
Prosecutors say Fregoso-Avina had not properly cleaned the ice off her windshield and didn't see Crow. She pulled over after the collision and stayed on the scene.
Provo police say she is from Mexico and was using a driver's license that wasn't hers.
