SALT LAKE CITY -- A local lawmaker's effort to put a dent in crime by limiting personal information a thief can access from vehicle registration has cleared another hurdle.

HB 79, sponsored by Rep. Stephen Handy, R-Layton, passed the Senate by a unanimous vote Friday and now advances to the governor.

The bill will remove address information from vehicle registrations and also lead to insurance companies being able to produce insurance information without an address.

Handy noted that a rash of thefts have been linked to thieves who stole vehicle registrations to gain access to a person's home address.
