Syracuse posted an easier than expected 53-36 victory over Region 2 champion Hunter in its opening-round battle.

The Tians built a 28-19 lead at halftime, but after the Wolverines got the score to within five with a quarter to play, Syracuse closed out the game in style.

Diante Mitchell led the way with 21 points and five steals. Dulton Whatcott chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Syracuse, the No. 4 seed out of Region, will now play at 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday against American Fork, a  51-47 winner over Jordan.
