CENTERVILLE -- The woman who died in a crash on Interstate 15 Monday night has been identified as Maria Herrera, 18, of Layton, Utah Highway Patrol officials said.
Herrera was driving a 2003 Subaru Legacy going north on I-15 when she failed to slow down for stopped traffic near Centerville at 8:19 p.m., said UHP Corporal Todd Johnson.
Northbound traffic on 1-15 was closed in Farmington due to a officer shooting of Brett Max Knight, 33, who led police in a chase from Lehi to Kaysville. Knight was killed in the shooting.
Herrera entered the left emergency lane, lost control of the Subaru, slid sideways across two lanes before hitting the right rear corner of a nearly stopped Hyundai passenger car. She then continued into the next lane and crashed into the rear of a stopped semi-truck. She continued into the right shoulder and was ejected out of the driver's door.
She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, officers said.
No one else was seriously injured.
