PROVO — Provo police say a pit bull was shot in the shoulder by an officer trying to serve a drug search warrant.

Police say they knocked on the door on East Cedar Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Monday and had the door slammed shut on them.

They say that as they forced the door open, the suspect’s dog ran out and attacked one of the officers on the porch.

Authorities say the officer backpedaled to get away from the dog, but lost his balance and shot a round while falling backward.

Police say the dog was shot in the shoulder and later taken to an animal shelter for treatment.

Fifty-one-year-old suspect David Hayes was arrested on marijuana and spice charges, along with resisting arrest and weapons possession by a restricted person.
