Bills on spitting infectious material pass the Senate

SALT LAKE CITY — A pair of bills imposing new penalties for people spitting or throwing potentially infectious material at another person, passed the Senate.

SB 97 carries a potential felony charge if a person spits or throws or vomits saliva on a law enforcement officer if that person knows they are infected with HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C. The second bill, SB 98, carries penalties for the same offenses committed on the general public, except the penalties are classified as class A or B misdemeanors.

Both bills passed the Senate unanimously and now advance to the House. Both bills are sponsored by Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton.
