LCA, St. Joseph fall

RICHFIELD — The Layton Christian Academy Eagles never saw the Valley Buffaloes coming.

Defending champions LCA fell to Valley, the fifth-place team from Region 20, by a stunning 54-41 margin on Wednesday to open the state 1-A boys basketball tournament at the Sevier Valley Center.

D.J. Riffle scored 17 points and Chance Spencer added 16 for the Buffs, who helped their cause with a 19 of 29 effort at the charity stripe.

Duce Namazi scored 15 points and Ricardo Gomez added a dozen for LCA, which went 3 of 11 at the foul line. The Eagles meet Pinnacle in a consolation game at 2:30 p.m.

• TABIONA 71, ST. JOSEPH 71 66 (OT): At Richfield, the Jayhawks made a strong late run to take the lead, but gave up a buzzer-beating, game-tying 3-pointer in regulation and had little left for overtime.

Bailey Hogan led Tabiona with 17 points.

Nick Gruet scored 17, David Donlevy added 16 and Sebastian Pomeroy chipped in with 13 for the Jayhawks, who play Wayne at 11:30 a.m. in a consolation game. St. Joseph was outscored by 16 at the foul line
