SALT LAKE CITY -- A petition to fund a discovery center at Four Corners has been scrapped after members of a state economic development appropriations committee discovered one of the petitioners had misrepresented herself in regard to an environmental agenda.
Lawmakers voted in committee late Tuesday to eliminate a bid for $1 million for the center after documentation showed one of the project presenters, Janet Ross, had sent a letter to the Secretary of Interior to designate a wilderness area in Southern Utah. Ross had disavowed being associated with an activist agenda during her committee presentation last week.
Rep. Jeremy Peterson, R-Ogden, said a local outcry about the center's agenda prompted lawmakers to question Ross and other presenters about the focus of the project. Monticello Mayor Bill Boyle was also part of the presentation and emailed lawmakers about pulling the item after the letter came to light.
