Maintenance an important key to having a nice yard

Continued lawn maintenance is a key to a great-looking yard. Liz and Craig Mitton of Ben Lomond Landscape Maintenance said it’s important for residents as well as businesses to take care of the little things to have a well-groomed yard.

Hiring an outside company to do yard maintenance has become more and more popular over the years, because people like the convenience of it, Craig said.

“They like to have their Saturdays and weekend to do what they want to do,” he said. “What may take a homeowner a weekend to do, we can do in a very short period of time.”

Liz said their business offers full-maintenance lawn care, fertilization, sprinkler repair, outside planting, mowing and trimming. They have been in business since 1997, and there is a big market in the area because people want their lawns looking good.

Craig said the right equipment and tools make a huge difference with yard maintenance. He suggests that people have their lawns mowed regularly — like one time per week — and to also trim and prune shrubs and trees that often as well.

Fertilization is also a secret to the success of a healthy, lush, green lawn. Craig said outside companies often can do the fertilizing for less than a typical homeowner, because a lawn care business can buy the fertilizing products in bulk at wholesale prices, whereas residential homeowners buy it in much smaller amounts for a bigger price tag. He said a lot of times homeowners get frustrated fertilizing for themselves, because they don’t get the chemical balance just right and have issues with their lawns. Trained technicians are certified and have a vast knowledge of how much fertilizer to use, and the exact best times to do it.

Craig suggested lawns be fertilized six times per year starting in the latter part of March. Some people only like to do it a couple of times a year and can still have success, but for best results Craig suggests the six times.
