Nonresident cap removal advances

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah universities will be allowed to more aggressively court out-of-state students to help fill the void expected to result from a new LDS Church policy allowing younger missionaries, thanks to a measure approved by the Senate on Thursday.

SB 51, sponsored by Sen. Steve Urquhart, R-St. George, removes the cap on the number of waivers allotted to institutions of higher learning for nonresident students. The bill now advances to the House.

Removing the cap is expected to help universities fill a void caused by an announcement in October 2012 that missionaries for the LDS Church can now begin service upon graduation from high school.
