Companies warn of phone scam

Rocky Mountain Power and Questar Gas are warning their customers to be aware of a nationwide telephone scam.

A news release states that scammers posing as customer service representatives have been attempting to get personal financial information from utility customers.

According to the release, the scammers tell their targets they haven’t paid their utility bill and threaten to discontinue service. The scammers then direct victims to make a payment by calling a specific number.

When Rocky Mountain Power or Questar Gas customer service representatives call customers, the release states, they always have the customers’ account number. If a customer is still suspicious, they are advised to tell the representative they’ll call back at the company’s public service phone number.

The release also reminds customers never to give out credit card or personal information to unsolicited callers. If customers receive a suspicious call, they are encouraged to give details to police.
