W. Valley police kill Rottweiler while trying to catch owner

WEST VALLEY CITY— Police say a Rottweiler was shot to death while police were trying to arrest its owner for an assault in Taylorsville.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says his department got a call around 2:15 p.m. Thursday about a possible armed assault. Hoyal tells the Deseret News they found the suspect in a Little Caesars parking lot, and used police vehicles to keep him from fleeing.

Police say they opened the driver’s door and the dog inside “charged” officers.

Hoyal says officers tried to kick the dog, but it kept trying to reach them, so they shot it.

The Rottweiler died on the scene.

Officers say its owner was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated assault on a police officer, assault and fleeing from police.
