LAS VEGAS — The Weber State University softball team came up short in two games on the first day of the Eller Media Stadium Classic on Friday.
The Wildcats suffered a five-inning, 13-2 setback to DePaul in their tournament opener, and then fell 6-0 to tournament host UNLV in their second game.
It was a rough day at the plate for Weber State’s hitters, who garnered just six hits in the two games.
The Wildcats’ two runs against DePaul came in the first inning, with freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp scoring on a throwing error and sophomore catcher Janel Cunningham getting an RBI single to plate junior shortstop Brooke Silva.
Weber State held the came close early, trailing just 4-2 after three inning, but DePaul scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game on run-rule.
In the second game, the Wildcats battled the host Rebels through the first five innings, holding UNLV to just one run, but suffered through a five-run sixth inning that put the game all but out of reach.
Five Weber State players notched hits against UNLV, but the Wildcats couldn’t string those hits together to produce offense.
Weber State will face New Mexico State and Cal State Northridge today for the second day of the Classic, before taking on the Aggies and Matadors again on Sunday to wrap up the three-day, six-game tournament.
