SALT LAKE CITY -- A state senator says cockfighting should not be a felony in Utah because abortion is legal in the state.
Sen. Allen Christensen, R-North Ogden, made the statement Monday.
Christensen criticized the measure, calling cockfighting a natural event. He added, "yet we allow people to go ahead and murder their unborn babies."
He said owners raise game fowl for one purpose, and that is to fight.
The measure would make it a third-degree felony to own or train game fowl for fighting. That means up to a year in prison and up to a $2,500 fine. Lawmakers say current state laws against cockfighting are too lax and invite gamblers to Utah.
The Senate is set to vote on the bill this week.
