SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah officials say the state will soon see new Amber Alert technology that will send missing child notifications to virtually all cellphones.
Utah Attorney General spokesman Paul Murphy tells KSL the state is planning to join the National Wireless Emergency Alerts System, which sends out a beep notification when an Amber Alert is issued.
Cellphone users would automatically receive the alerts unless they opt out or turn off notifications through their phone settings.
The loud new tones are meant to grab people's attention but they've garnered some criticism in other states. In Florida, some users were irked that they were awaken by the sound in the middle of the night.
Murphy says that the Utah alerts won't be sent out between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
