LAS VEGAS -- San Diego held on to edge BYU 72-69 on Friday night in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at Las Vegas.
The game seesawed back and forth throughout at Orleans Arena. BYU battled back late on a Matt Carlino 3-pointer to cut the margin to one point. After the Toreros' Johnny Dee nailed a pair of free throws with 6.9 seconds to go, Carlino had a look at a game-tying 3, but the shot rimmed out.
Dee led the Toreros (16-17) with 25 points; Chris Andersen added 16 while Ken Rancifer checked in with 15. San Diego, the No. 6 seed, will advance to play St. Mary's tonight in the semifinals.
BYU was led by Tyler Haws and Brandon Davies with 20 points apiece. Carlino added 13. The BYU bench tallied six points on the game.
The Cougars (21-11) will see their string of six straight NCAA tournament appearances come to an end. BYU could be invited to any of several other postseason tourneys.
BYU trailed 35-28 at the break. Davies added nine rebounds and eight assists for the Cougars.
The upset was the second of the day in the WCC tourney. No. 9 seed Loyola Marymount knocked off Santa Clara 6o-58. LMU will not meet top see Gonzaga in the other semifinal.
