Paragliders want to protect popular point from rock excavation

SALT LAKE CITY -- Paragliders are trying to protect one of the best places to pursue their passion in Utah from mining excavation.

Chris Hunlow tells KSL that Geneva Rock's mining expansion will change the Point of the Mountain's ridgeline, which is critical to helping paragliders catch wind currents.

He says he and other paragliders don't seek confrontation, but want to find a compromise so the area straddling the Salt Lake-Utah county line can be preserved for future generations.

Geneva Rock spokesman Jake White says the company supports the paragliders and even traded some of its property there to accommodate them a few years ago.

He says the company is excavating one of the slopes within its property boundaries, but has no plans go much beyond that.
