Tuition and fees have increased by 538 percent since the 1980s. Student debt is as crippling as credit card debt only worse, because I can claim bankruptcy if my bills mount to the point I can never pay them back. In all honesty I owe no credit card debt but I do owe about $2,000 in student debt now. I used to owe a lot more, but I have had my tax refunds taken. Student debt has kept me from higher paying jobs because employers refuse to hire me because of a negative credit report. I don't understand how I'm supposed to pay the bill if I can't get a job that lets me make enough money to pay them as well as live? I have been looked over for government jobs for the same reason.
The debt system is set up to keep us in debt and never see a way out; the payment I can afford I'm told is too little to even help. I can send it in, but it won't take me off of default status.
If Congress wants to really boost the economy and get out of debt, the salaries of multimillion dollar executives of banks should be lowered and banks should forgive student debt.
I may then be able to afford a house and a car that actually runs. I could get on a good payment plan I could afford and to begin living the dream of all Americans, to sleep soundly at night knowing I am in the black and safe.
