LAS VEGAS -- The Utah State Aggies watched the top two seeds in the WAC Tournament fall by the wayside early Thursday, before they took the court against UT-Arlington in their own quarterfinal game.
USU fell behind by 11 at halftime, and trailed by 18 points at one point. But the Aggies battled back to take a two-point lead with about six minutes to go. But the last shots didn't drop and the Aggies fell 83-78 in their final game in the Western Athletic Conference.
Jarred Shaw scored 20 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Spencer Butterfield finished with 19 points, while Ben Clifford and TeNale Roland scored 16 apiece for the Aggies (21-10) .
Kevin Butler led UTA with 23 points. Utah State had a chance to tie with a 3-pointer, but Butler stole a pass with 9 seconds left and streaked down the court to score and secure the victory for the fourth-seeded Mavericks (18-12).
On Friday, they'll face ninth-seeded UTSA, which upset top-seeded Louisiana Tech earlier Thursday.
Butler was 8 of 13 from the floor, including three 3-pointers. Karol Gruszecki added 17 points.
Texas-Arlington went ahead for good, 72-70, on Shaquille White-Miller's 3-pointer with 3:01 to play. Clifford's 3-pointer with 40 seconds left pulled Utah State within 80-78 before a Butler free throw set up the closing sequence.
