SALT LAKE CITY -- A local lawmaker's bid to open access for groups to publicly funded shooting ranges has passed legislative review and is now headed to the governor for further review.
SB 107, sponsored by Sen. Allen Christensen, was approved Thursday by both the House and Senate.
The legislation was heavily modified from the beginning of the process to the end. The final bill only opens access to certain public shooting ranges and defines when that access can be restricted.
Originally, the legislation covered all ranges, including those for the military and police agencies, but was amended to cover only public ranges that fall outside those two groups, such as ROTC ranges built adjacent to some high schools.
Christensen lamented that the bill had been watered down in making a final pitch for approval of the measure.
