Layton officials vote to close loophole

LAYTON -- City officials have voted to close a loophole that allowed the parking of disconnected commercial trailers on city roadways.

Members of the city council voted unanimously at a recent meeting to amend Title 10 of the city code, prohibiting the parking of commercial trailers on roadways. The change was spurred by a harsh winter and city crews running into disconnected trailers on city roads, in trying to remove snow, according to Steven Garside, assistant city attorney.

Garside said law enforcement has some discretion in dealing with short-term parking issues, in enforcing the newly amended ordinance.

Councilman Scott Freitag wondered why code needed to be amended, since winter parking regulations already made it illegal to park on some roadways overnight. Garside pointed out the ordinance did not deal with disconnected trailers.
