Man arrested after officer-involved shooting in Midvale

MIDVALE — Police have arrested a 20-year-old man accused of pulling a gun on an officer and prompting a shooting during a traffic stop in Midvale.

Unified police say they arrested Sergio Garcia Jr. after the confrontation about 2 a.m. Sunday. He was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, fleeing, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, and possession of a concealed sawed-off shotgun.

Authorities say Garcia got out of the car during a traffic stop and brandished a shotgun. The officer fired several shots at Garcia, who then ran from the scene.

Officers say Garcia was found hiding near a garage, and was bit by a police dog. Officials say he was treated for minor injuries.

Another man who was in the car was questioned and released.
