ROY — A 77-year-old man lost control of his SUV Tuesday night and slammed into a carport pole at the Orchard Cove Apartment complex at 1801 W. 4650 South.
Roy Police Sgt. Curtis Gibson said Lorry Atencio tried to turn west on 4800 South from Airport Road but turned too wide and missed the road completely. After driving west in a field for about 50 yards, Atencio turned sharp right, crossing 4800 South and smashing through a plastic fence around the apartment complex. Atencio’s Durango then took out a large pine tree before crashing into the apartment carport, collapsing it onto two other vehicles.
Gibson said a medical problem may have caused the crash. No one was injured, though a thick, long piece of metal from the carport sliced through the Durango’s windshield on the passenger side.
“If he would have had a passenger,” Gibson said, “this most likely would have been fatal.”
Joshua Deans, whose 2012 Mazda was under the collapsed carport and sustained damage, said he could feel Atencio hitting the carport from inside his apartment.
“It shook the building,” he said. “I haven’t felt anything like that since I was in Iraq.”
Atencio was treated in an ambulance on scene before being taken to a local hospital, Gibson said.
Gibson said the Durango was likely totalled and estimated the total damage at $50,000-$60,000. Police cited Atencio with an improper right turn.
