SALT LAKE CITY  -- A man fatally shot by officers attempting to arrest a fugitive has been identified by Salt Lake City Police.

Ronnie Manuel Ontiveros, 37, was killed after opening fire on officers from an interagency force. The officers were seeking a fugitive inside the Salt Lake City home Tuesday. Ontiveros was not the fugitive they were looking for.

Police Sgt. Shawn Josephson says the shooting prompted officers to return fire and strike Ontiveros. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The fugitive inside the home later surrendered to police. He was wanted on a parole violation.

It was not immediately known whether Ontiveros was connected to the fugitive.

The officers seeking the fugitive were part of a force operated by the U.S. Marshals.
