Our View: A day to give

Mar 21 2013 - 1:02pm

The people of Utah have an enviable record when it comes to helping others. Our state ranks among the leaders in donating to charitable causes. On Friday, March 22, Utahns have an opportunity to access a website and choose between more than 550 nonprofits that are seeking donations. Love UT Give UT started at midnight on Friday, March 22, and continues for 24 hours. The website is http://www.loveutgiveut.org

One positive of having a one-site location for donors to choose what organization they wish to support is that it allows smaller Utah nonprofits better access to the general public. About four-fifths of state nonprofits have annual budgets that don't exceed $100,000.

A day of online charitable donations, such as Love UT Give UT's effort, provides opportunities to gather donations that these smaller groups could not access in conventional fundraising manners.

Many Top of Utah nonprofits will be represented on Friday. Ogden's Treehouse Children's Museum is planning a party tonight to celebrate. The Treehouse has incentives designed for today's donations. They include companies that match donations and gifts for donors, including autographed copies of books. Also, many Utah companies are helping by matching employees' contributions today. One is Flying J, which will match employees' gifts up to a total of $50,000.

Not often is there an opportunity to help others in such a convenient manner. We urge Utahns to give.
