What did we do wrong? I loved the military, the roar of the jets above my head, the pageantry, the tradition, the love of country. As a kid, it was great to move and have the chance to explore a new place and make new friends and start over. I was in ROTC in high school, because I understood from a kid standpoint that the military was a way out, a chance to go to school and give back to my country. I married a GI instead. We went wherever the Air Force sent us we endured deployments, lived far away from family, and raised our children. It was a life for the most part I loved.
When my husband went to Iraq I kept the home fire burning with help from friends and church and watched the news with a sense of worry and dread and I rejoiced when he returned home safely. We retired soon after that but the base and those jets were in our blood and my husband became civil service. He loved the jets, the brotherhood of other retirees who had spent their youth working around the jets. A four-day week may sound great, but we only get paid for a four-day week, also.
Why is someone who crossed the border illegally more important and valued more than me? Did I misunderstand the meaning of illegal? Why is a country that hates us, allowed money and our war machines? Why is a Senate, that has not produced a budget in four years, allowed to dictate that I must redesign mine to make up for a shortfall they enacted? What did we do wrong that makes our own country hate us so?
