Joseph and Merlyn Sowers of Roy will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were honored with a surprise party at the Roy City Building on March 23.
They were married on March 28, 1963, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Their vows were solemnized on March 18, 1964, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple.
He was born and raised in Iowa. He served in the Navy, worked for Boeing Co. until he retired and then worked for Thiokol as an engineer. His career moved their family several times between Seattle; Fort Worth, Texas; and Wichita, Kan. They have lived in Sunset, Ogden and Thatcher. He has enjoyed camping and hiking.
She was born in Salt Lake City and moved to Ogden as a child and graduated from Weber High School. She volunteered in the Civil Air Patrol as a teen. She met her husband while working as a waitress at Moore’s in Ogden.
Since 2001, they have served LDS missions to McAllen, Texas; and St. Louis.
Their children are Carol Gardiner, Pattie Harris, Lisa McBride, Jodi Decker, Cristen Overbeck, Bryan Sowers, Janet Driscoll, Phillip Sowers and Jared Sowers.
They have 43 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
