FARMINGTON -- Funds raised from this year's Davis County Gala will go toward developing the county's first Boys & Girls Club.
Currently, Davis youths are served by the Weber-Davis Boys & Girls Club out of Roy.
Davis County Assistant Community and Economic Development Director Marlin Eldred announced Tuesday at the County Commission meeting that net proceeds from this year's gala will benefit the new Boys & Girls Club.
The theme of the ninth annual event, to be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5, at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, is a "Love Boat" cruise.
County officials jokingly assured everyone that this particular cruise liner will not generate motion sickness or get caught stranded offshore.
"Enjoy a one-of-a-kind, black-tie (life preserver optional) affair and incredible cruise-line cuisine on board Davis County's very own version of 'The Love Boat,'" Eldred said.
This year's gala features entertainment bythe Voodoo Orchestra, an up-tempo swing band. Event organizers selected the Boys & Girls Club as its fundraiser recipient to provide the organization with some of the seed money it needs to create a site somewhere in the county. A location for the new club is still forthcoming, officials said.
"Together, we can make a powerful difference and bring a new Boys & Girls Club site to Davis County. Our children need it," Eldred said in a prepared statement.
At this time most of the county's youths who would like to take part in such a program have to travel outside of the county borders, Eldred said.
"This year's gala aims to change that," he said.
During its eight-year history the annual gala has managed to raise $300,900 in net proceeds, which have been shared with such recipients as the Davis Alzheimer's Program, Chloe's Sunshine Park in Syracuse and the Children's Justice Center in Farmington.
"The purpose of the gala is to, first, celebrate Davis County and the Davis Conference Center; second, to entertain, bringing top-notch performers to Davis County; and third, to give back by selecting a worthy cause to support," Davis County Commissioner Louenda Downs said.
