Thumbs down to your "Thumbs up, thumbs down" this week (March 25, editorial). It was the most one-sided, mean, stereotypical piece of crap I've ever read in the Standard-Examiner in a long time. How dare the paper call our generation "the retirement home society." The social programs it calls "entitled" have been paid by us baby boomers for over 50 years. Think about it, we've been paying into Social Security and Medicare for over 50 years. Also when we turn 65, the government takes $100 out of our retirement or Social Security, plus we have to pay taxes on that.
I blame the government that decided to "borrow" the money from our Social Security accounts. President Ronald Regan decided to penalize federal retirees (after WWII) and a few other organizations by cutting our Social Security income by two-thirds. All of my Social Security and that of my husband, was earned on the "outside," but we're still penalized and receive only enough to pay for our Medicare.
One final note: All of the kids who have to move home because they've lost your jobs or wives or husbands or whatever, well don't go "home," 'cause children aren't allowed in the "retirement home."
