SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah man who allegedly let his 74-year-old mother die in a chair covered in her own filth will serve two years probation.

A district court also ordered 52-year-old Bradley D. Myers to community service and counseling. Myers originally faced three years in jail for criminal neglect.

Myers' attorney said in preliminary hearings that Geneil Larsen cancelled her own doctor appointments and told Myers she got up and walked around but did not.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Myers apologized, fought back tears and said he did his best.

Authorities found Larsen in 2011, covered in feces at the home she and Myers shared. Court documents show she stayed put in the chair for two weeks before her death and had exposed bone on her backside.
