LAYTON -- Northridge needed more.
Up by a narrow one-goal margin, the Knights pulled away from Syracuse with three decisive second-half goals to earn a 4-0 victory on Thursday.
Christian Hall notched two goals while Stevie Cannavina and Taige Smith each scored one more for Northridge.
First-year Knights coach Braden Mitchell said opening Region 1 play with a win was a shot in the arm for his squad.
"It was a big confidence win for us," Mitchell said. "We're looking to do something that Northridge hasn't done for a long time, to make the playoffs and get a region championship. I think this was a big step for us to get a win in our first region game."
Hall's performance showed he's "Just a great leader throughout, getting everyone else going," Mitchell said. "He just capitalizes on his opportunities and also on creating on his own."
The defense was just as important as goalkeeper Zach Nielson shut out the Titans.
Solid defense led to chances downfield, with Robert Crawford assisting on two goals for Northridge.
"He's our defender, so he was getting them going out of the back," Mitchell said. "Our defense played outstanding. It was definitely our best complete defensive game, between the four in the back plus our keeper."
Northridge improved to 3-3 for the year and 1-0 in Region 1 with the win against its crosscounty foe.
"We were just playing good possession soccer, capitalizing on opportunities," Mitchell said of the second-half outburst. "We had plenty of chances in the first half we couldn't quite get into the net. The second half we got them to go in for us."
* LAYTON CHRISTIAN 2, OAKLEY 0: At Layton, Armand Rukundo and Fernando Horta each scored for the Eagles, who led 1-0 at the half of a 2-A North contest.

* BEAR RIVER 5, PAYSON 1: At Garland, a trio of Tanners tallied goals for the Bears.
Tanner Anderson and Tanner Porter each scored twice and Tanner Van Valkenburg added another as Bear River rolled in a non-region battle.
