Grantsville -- With two league losses, it would have been an uphill battle for Da Bears to sweep their fourth consecutive Region 11 softball title.
Five-time defending state 3-A champion Bear River tightened up the league standings Friday with a 4-3 win over previously undefeated Grantsville.
Unbeaten Stansbury took over sole possession of the Region 11 race, with the Bears and Cowboys tied for second place.
"I thought the first five innings we played as well as we have all year, and it all started with our pitching," said Bear River coach Calvin Bingham. "We had a couple of really good defensive plays. The girls played well."
Senior right-hander Jordan Theurer, who has signed with Southern Utah University, gave up six hits with six strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter.
"For the first five innings, this is the best Jordan has pitched," Bingham said. "She had really good control and was hitting the corners."
Grantsville scored three sixth-inning runs, making it a one-run ballgame.
"They got a couple of hits in the sixth. I was worried they were going to come back and tie it," Bingham said. "They had the tying run at third base with no outs and we got out of the inning.
We were lucky; we dodged a bullet," he said. "We took advantage of their (three) errors."
Freshman Brenna Hinck went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Freshman Kylie Larkin was 2-for-3, and Theurer drilled a run-scoring double for Da Bears (8-2 overall, 3-1 league).
The Cowboys are 7-2, 3-1.
* Stansbury 15, Ogden 1 (five innings): At Ogden High, the Stallions swept their 10th consecutive victory.
Stansbury is 12-1, 3-0; the Tigers are 6-5, 1-3.
* Woods Cross 6, Weber 5: At Pleasant View's Earl Heninger Field, the Warriors trailed 5-0 after four innings and committed six errors.
Weber senior right-hander McKenna Bull, who has signed with BYU, allowed nine hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks.
Hali Bennion went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Johnni Arbon was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, and Bull had a two-run bomb -- her first career homer -- for defending 5-A champion Weber (2-3).
* Mountain Crest 9, Syracuse 5: At Syracuse, the Titans lost their fourth straight game.
Brittany Vasquez went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple and scored two runs. Courtney Starks smacked a two-run homer for Syracuse (2-8).
